John left school at 16 and learned to make cricket bats, working for Stuart Surridge, a former Surrey cricket captain. When Surridge’s moved out of London, John took redundancy and started working for himself making a few bats and doing repairs from a shed in his parent’s back garden at their home in Catford.
Within a few years the business was expanding and with very little cash John bought a van and some second hand tools and machinery. He also found a small shop to rent in order to cope with the increased amount of equipment and work.
Since then, John has continued to build up a reputation for his knowledge and quality of service and repairs that is second to none. Players from all over London, Kent and Essex bring their favourite bats and wicket keepers gloves into the shop for John’s expert attention, and repairs by mail order are dispatched to other sports shops and cricketers all over the country.
John’s reputation actually grew to the point that he was recommended to former Australian wicket keeper Ian Healy when Ian first toured in England. John was pleased to be able to provide his repair and refacing service to Ian throughout Ian’s extremely successful career and the two still remain friends. The same service has been, and is still, being provided to many of our County and International players.
Most of John’s regular customers also know that John, and his wife Sue, are lifelong and passionate supporters of Charlton Athletic Football Club. A telephone call on a Saturday morning during the football season if you are planning a journey, is a good idea, just to check on the day’s closing time, they may be away!
